A temporary blindness or painful eye condition caused by exposure of unprotected eyes to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial sources such as sun-tanning beds, a welder's arc, and halogen desk lamps. Symptoms include tearing, pain, redness, swollen eyelids, headache, and are due to a burn of the surface of the eye (cornea). Vision usually returns in less than a day. Prevention involves sunglasses with adequate UVB protection and full coverage of the eyes.
