Definition:

A scientifically based process consisting of four steps:

  • hazard identification,
  • hazard characterization,
  • exposure assessment and
  • risk characterization

A hazard is a source of potential harm from past, current, or future exposures.

Exposure assessment is the process of finding out how people come into contact with a hazardous substance [or agent], how often and for how long they are in contact with the substance, and how much of the substance they are in contact with.

Risk is the probability that something will cause injury or harm.
